What to do whilst
waiting for an engineer?

There’s no predicting a plumbing and heating emergency. Whilst regular maintenance can minimise your risk of a plumbing emergency, it can often happen when you least expect it.

The first step is to call a plumbing and heating engineer who is Gas Safe registered for an assessment of your problem.

Whilst you’re waiting for an engineer, there are things you can to do help reduce damage and stop the problem from getting worse.

Water leak

  • Turn off the water
The first thing you should do is turn off the water from the main shut-off valve. This will often stop the flow of water unless the valve is where you’re having the issue.
  • Clear all standing water
Standing water can cause damage to your flooring, furniture, and walls. To clear the water, you will need to use towels, a wet vacuum, or a mop and bucket.
  • Check electrical appliances
Relocate any electrical appliances close to the leak (if possible, before the leak has time to spread). Do not touch electrical items that may have come in contact with water, until they’re proven safe by our professionals.
  • Take pictures
Take pictures of the damages as well as write down a list of what was damaged. This will assist you when making a claim with your insurance provider.

Gas leak

  • Open your doors and windows
If you smell gas in your property, immediately open all doors and windows in your property, and then move into fresh air.
  • Turn off the gas at the main taps
This can generally be found near the gas meter and has a handle that can be turned 90 degrees.
  • Do NOT:
Turn on any light switches or power
Light any sort of flame inside the property
Use any appliances that could cause a spark

Overflowing toilet

  • Do NOT flush again
Turn off the toilet’s water shut-off valve
If your toilet has a water shut-off valve, it will be located outside the tank close to where the toilet connects to the wall.

  • Tie the float so that it won’t move around
Locate the float inside the water tank and fix it in place to ensure no additional water will fill the tank.
